 PNGMC GMDSS Lab

In 1992 the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) was introduced. It has introduced new technology which has completely transformed maritime radio-communications. This new system is quicker, simpler and, most importantly, more efficient and reliable.

A major difference between the GMDSS and the previous 'Wireless Telegraphy' (W/T) and 'Radio Telephony' (R/T) systems is that the equipment required to be carried by a ship should be determined by it's area of operation rather than by it's size.

The PNGMC's new GMDSS training laboratory forms a one of the major facilities to come from the Aus AID Institutional Strengthening project. The resulting facility has put the PNGMC at the forfront of GMDSS training in the region. The lab is has a full complement of Marine communications equipment required for all sea areas from A1 to A4, giving global coverage.

The equipment includes:

Full Inmarsat-B system.
Twin Inmarsat-C systems.
Full MF/HF Marine radio installation, including MF/HF Telex and twin MF/HF DSC units.
Two full VHF Marine radio installations with DSC.
Navtex receiver.
Marine battery bank system.
All survival craft equipment.
Standard facimilie facilities for Satellite and telex reception.
