The maritime industry offers two main entry pathways, depending on a student’s level of education: Ratings Entry (Grade 10) and Cadetship Entry (Grade 12). Both pathways apply to either Deck or Engineering streams and lead to progressively higher certification through sea service and further training.
Both pathways provide structured progression from entry-level training to senior maritime certification. Advancement is based on a combination of academic performance, approved training, and required sea time, leading to nationally and internationally recognized qualifications.
Each program provides the basic knowledge, practical skills, and safety training needed to work on board a vessel. Students will learn how ships operate, how to follow safety procedures, and how to work as part of a disciplined team in a marine environment.
The Rating program is the starting point for those who want to join a ship’s crew in a support role. Cadetships are more advanced pathways that train students to become officers, with greater responsibility for navigation or machinery operations.
All training programs at PNGMC follow international standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). These standards ensure that seafarers are trained to work safely and competently anywhere in the world.
In Papua New Guinea, maritime training and certification are regulated by the Papua New Guinea National Maritime Safety Authority. This means all courses are approved and monitored to meet both national laws and international requirements.
Starting a career at sea offers many opportunities. It allows individuals to gain practical skills, travel, and work in an international industry. With experience and further training, students can progress to higher positions on board ships or move into shore-based maritime jobs.
